I just read about your instant translation service in the New York Times today. I just tried it out, and it is fantastic! This story should have been on the front page. I have friends in various countries, and we email each other in stilted, broken English. Now I can write freely, and they understand. This is truly amazing.

My Kindergarten class has had the honor to become e-mail partners with Durham School in Australia. The students that we shared with are physically challenged. They have made a tremendous impact on my class, as they have a deeper understanding and appreciation of how it feels to be handicapped.

We started the correspondence from this semester. So far, my students and I are having great time reading the emails from the students in another American school.

Just one thing I want to remind of those teachers who are interested in the project---start as early as possible and get the full list of all your students' emails as fast as you can. It will save you a lot of time and students will have more time talking to each other.

In addition, don't worry about your students' English ability, they will find out their own ways to communicate with their e-pals. Also, for those students who don't live in English-spoken countries, the e-pal programs let them learn the culture and the daily spoken English that they might not learn in the classroom.

The most important part is students will have the motivation to learn English in class because they want to know the correct way to write to their e-pals in English!

It really helps!

Good luck!

Sincerely,
Constance

During a four week period a group of my pupils communicated via e-mail with a group of pupils in Dysart Iowa. It was a most exciting project and it opened up an area of the USA to us. We would like to think that Ireland was opened up to our friends in Dysart too. Both teachers are still in communication with each other and some of the pupils continued on after the project ended. well done epals.com :-)

Children and teens who can tell us interesting things about the world around them can open a window to another world for hospitalised and homebound children.

A great way for young people all over the world to increase their understanding of one another and decrease ethnocentrism and racism.
