The Way We Are Glogs (Online Posters)

Project Title: The Way We Are Glogs (Online Posters)

Submitted by: Dawn Krueger, USA

Partner: Edyta Piatek, Poland

Project Type: collaborative

Student Ages: 12-14

Description: This short project fell within the third email exchange for the larger ePals The Way We Are project.  To see the project overview for The Way We Are project visit: http://www.epals.com/projects/info.aspx?DivID=TheWayWeAre_overview.

This third email exchange deals with the environment that the students live in. Students shared information about the village of Mishicot such as size, jobs, shoppes, schools, recreational activities, etc. The students also described neighboring cities in regards to size, events, and location. We mentioned Lake Michigan and other geographic landforms near Mishicot. Size of school and location from house, main method of transportation, design and architecture of buildings in Mishicot and like/dislike living in Mishicot which is a rural community compared to a larger city like Radom Poland.

Each student created a Glog which is a creative, online poster. The Glogs are private and monitored by me. Students were excited to use technology and share their glogs with their ePal in Poland. My students received Glogs from their ePals in Poland and were very excited. Pictures were shared showing architecture, school, fashion, themselves, friends, and events that are popular in the area.

Objectives:

Students will be able to identify geographic landforms and nearby sites.

Students will be able to accurately describe Mishicot Wisconsin including types of transportation, weather, businesses, activities and neighboring cities.

Students will be able to compare and contrast life in a rural community (Mishicot, Wisconsin) to life in a larger city (Radom Poland).

Students will create a Glog (an online creative poster) and will exchange Glogs with their ePals.

Key Project Element(s):

Culminating Activity: Examples of my students’ Glogs and Glogs from their ePals in Poland http://www.mishicot.k12.wi.us/faculty/dkrueger/poland.cfm

I love this project.  Could you explain how you monitored the glogs?  Keeping the kids safe online is a concern at our school.

Thanks!

Hi Sonya.  I created this lesson.  I understand your concern but Glogster allows teachers to create student accounts.  You give the students their login information and you are able to access every student's account.  You can delete any information you feel is inappropriate.  I did not have any problems with my students.  I hope this helps.  My students LOVED this project:)

Sonya,

Where are you from and how old are your students.  Maybe we could collaborate to complete this project.  I am from Philadelphia, PA and I teach gifted students ages 6-14.
