Participating students will improve their communication and internet technology skills, develop connections with their peers in other countries, and become better prepared to compete in a 21st century global economy. Cross-cultural encounters, broader understanding of global interdependence, and changing balance of economic and political power define international relations and, in some very real sense, reshape the world today. Our next generation of Americans will be continually challenged to engage in unprecedented ways with the global community, both collaboratively and competitively.

This reality already weighs heavily on the mind of U.S. employers. A 2006 study by Peter Hart Associates revealed that 72 percent of business leaders wish that those entering the workforce were better prepared to compete in a global economy with a higher level of intercultural knowledge.
