    Re: Teaching Shapes?, USA

Have you tried art? Cut sponges into the shapes you wish to teach, dip them in tempera and stamp them on paper. Kids can carry a card with a shape on it and then find it in the room. It could be a block with the same shape, the window, top of a jar, etc. Sort of like a shape scavenger hunt. Cut shapes from heavy cardboard or use the special math attribute blocks you can purchase, have the kids feel the shapes, good if you have them in different sizes. Eat shapes, find crackers in different shapes, sort and eat, make large shapes on the floor with tape, walk around the shapes, sing the name of the shape as you go, jump in the square, sit in the circle, make up games with the shapes on the floor.

Sides and corners. I do a fun project with colored toothpicks and marshmallows. The toothpicks represent the sides and the marshmallows are the corners with the exception of rectangles because you have to make it longer. Limited to rectangle, squares and triangles. Songs. I found a cd for math. It is a fun song something like this "I am a circle like a spinning wheel, I am a square like a pizza box,....

Hi Dawn, I am an SDC teacher for children (3-5 years) with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I like to use the Totline Publications, which can be purchased on Amazon.com. They have a variety of books to teach shapes, numbers, Alphabet, colors, etc;. These publications also give you crafty ideas to incorporate into a lesson and songs to keep lessons interesting. Try using them and good luck!

    Teaching Shapes?, USA

Hi teachers, I am looking for lessons on shapes. I would like to vary my lessons as I work with Pre-K and K special education students and I feel that if I can present the information in a variety of ways, chances for mastery may occur.
