Re: Loss of Animal Habitats, USA

One of the reasons that elephants are threatened right now is the loss of habitat.  If animals lose their land because humans move in, or for other reasons, they die out.  They don't have enough room to live and they don't have enough to eat.  I think it is great, Grace, how you joined a group that is working to help the koalas.  And riding your bike to raise money is a great idea.  Even us kids can help out!

Re: Loss of Animal Habitats, USA

I love animals and I care very much about their well-being.  One thing I did last year was to organize a bike-a-thon that benefitted koalas.  I had to do a report for school about the koala and everything I learned really made me want to help them.  Their eucalytpus trees are being destroyed and they are very picky eaters and won't eat anything else so they are starving.  There were some organizations in the back of one of the books I read that you could contact for more information.  I contacted one and was so moved by the work that they were doing I decided to help.  I got pledges from friends and family and did a bike-a-thon to raise money.  It wasn't a lot but I think every little bit helps.  They were very thankful and wrote me this really nice letter.

I agree with you because it is not good for dogs to be that way. I never threw a dog away or ever killed one. My name is Ronald.

Hello, my name is Jessica. Animals have feelings too, just like us. I think we should treat them in a nicer way like you would want to be treated if you were an animal. Some dogs have no homes. They eat whatever they can find because they are dying of hunger. I wouldn't like to see my dogs eating from the dirty streets.

Dear Makenzie I think you are right. How can people be so harsh to animals? They are so cool. From the smallest to the biggest, they are all great, living animals. How would we like if we got our home torn down? We would feel sad. That's what the animals would feel like seeing their homes being chopped down. We have heaps of places so why do we need more? My horse, Boy, got put down because he does not like children. Some people don't like children but they don't get put down. So why did Boy have to get put down? He was a great horse. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if people did not chop down trees, instead they grow them. Animals are so great, why do people need to be so mean to them? from Kimberley.

Animals. What about their homes and wildlife? Why do we tear it apart? Take this for an example. It's like if you were to have no food, water or shelter, you would starve. You would be cold. How would you like to have your house torn apart or taken away? Most people don't care about animals. They take dogs and throw them on the side of the road. How would you like to be treated that way? It's a harsh threat to animals. It's like you when you break your leg. It's not easy to get around, is it? How would you feel if you were an animal and you were surrounded by hunters? Your friend, Makenzie
