I just read about rain harvesting and rain barrels.  One inch of rain on one house's roof equals 625 gallons of rainwater.  That's a lot of water that you could use to water your garden or lawn.  I'm going to encourage my parents to get a rain barrel.

Water is pretty plentiful where I live.  We don't ever seem to run out.  It is clean and it is free (unless you buy bottled water).  Here's my answers to your questions:

    1.  My family doesn't harvest rain water but my next door neighbor does to water her plants in her yard.  She uses a rain barrel.

    2.  We learned about conserving water at school but I don't really practice it at home too much.  My sister always tells me to turn the water off when I brush my teeth though.

    3.  I don't live in a desert so I don't know much about this.

    4.  Our water is pure.  Once after a really heavy rain storm though we did have to boil the water before we could use it.

What is the water like where you live?

    Will

    Re: Water Conservation Project, India

I live in Illinois and rainwater harvesting is really big here.  Lots of people have rain barrels to collect water.  You can buy them at the farmer's market and they are painted with all of these crazy colors!  People here are also very interested in how the rainwater runs across the land and where it goes.  They are working to prevent flooding and erosion.

At school they teach us about water conservation and how you should turn the water off when you brush your teeth and not take long showers.  I don't remember ever having a water shortage here though.  And they don't restrict us watering our lawns like they do in some places.

The water that comes out of the tap is already purified.  Our town won some award for the best tasting water or something but it just takes like plain old water to me.  My family also uses a water purifier--you pour the water from the sink into this pitcher and anything bad gets strained out.

    Hope this is helpful,

    Grace
