I don't understand how in other cultures, some words are feminine, and others are masculine. How can something like a plate, a place, a tree, or a food have gender? When I was listening to public radio, the newscasters were talking about how the gender of a noun can change how people of different cultures think. For example, in German, the word "bridge" is male. Germans may describe a bridge as "strong", or "towering". People in cultures where "bridge" is female may describe one as "elegant", "long", and "beautiful." I don't understand how that works. - Pax
