The hardest thing for me to understand in other cultures is the writings in China and Japan. I do not see how they can call those letters.

Hi, my name is Jose and I think that the hardest thing for me to understand in other cultures is the way they dress.

Please respond. This is a school project.  Thanks!

Hi:) I'm from Ukraine. I completely agree with boys about words' gender too. I study German as well. Although I like their culture, it's difficult to imagine how girl(Madchen) can be neutrum and head (Kopf) m?

Hi Pax. I am exactly agree with you about words' genders. I am learning French in school and the most difficult side of the learning French is genders of words. There are lots of words in that language and I can't memorize all words' genders. It's so difficult to learn.

I don't understand how in other cultures, some words are feminine, and others are masculine. How can something like a plate, a place, a tree, or a food have gender? When I was listening to public radio, the newscasters were talking about how the gender of a noun can change how people of different cultures think. For example, in German, the word "bridge" is male. Germans may describe a bridge as "strong", or "towering". People in cultures where "bridge" is female may describe one as "elegant", "long", and "beautiful." I don't understand how that works. - Pax

I think the language is the most important thing to understand a culture. Because, language keeps the special things of the culture it belongs. For instance, I am Turkish and I think I can't understand Japanese culture. I must live in Japan and learn their language so that I can understand their culture.

And the most important thing is, although you can't understand or didn't like one's culture, you must be respectful, always.

Hi. I am Imre.  I am from Indonesia.

I think the reason why we can understand the other culture is because we don't know what is the culture's meaning.  Why in the celebration we just do somethings not usually like what usually we did?

    Any opinions?

I understand we all have different veiws of different cultures. I am Irish and some people may or may not understand the St. Patrick day celebrations and the differences between the way some people celebrate them and the way the Irish do. What is hardest for you to understand in other cultures?
