I am a British teacher working in the United Arab Emirates. I teach grade 4 and we have recently been doing some work on natural disasters and how people around the world prepare for and deal with them.

Most of my class are not native English speakers but we are an international school, teaching only in English so this would be a great opportunity for them to develop their communication skills and link to our unit.

Only one problem, the weather here is generally pretty stable. While we have some extreme heat out in the desert and very hot summers, there are only a few recent documented cases of tornadoes and some effects from cyclone Gonu in 2007.

It means that although we can share information about our climate and those few cases, most of the class won't have experienced it first hand but we would really like to link up with a class who have.

Please let me me know if you are willing to help.

I heard about a class offered through a local karate studio that focuses on disaster preparedness for the whole family. Are there any other local, San Diego or So Cal groups that offer similar classes? Has anyone found a specific method of instruction more helpful than others? Thanks for the advice!
