According to the article, "It is interactive, 3-D animation software available at no cost as a public service from Carnegie Mellon University at http://www.alice.org/."

From the website:
    What is Alice?
Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web. Alice is a freely available teaching tool designed to be a student's first exposure to object-oriented programming. It allows students to learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animated movies and simple video games. In Alice, 3-D objects (e.g., people, animals, and vehicles) populate a virtual world and students create a program to animate the objects.
In Alice's interactive interface, students drag and drop graphic tiles to create a program, where the instructions correspond to standard statements in a production oriented programming language, such as Java, C++, and C#. Alice allows students to immediately see how their animation programs run, enabling them to easily understand the relationship between the programming statements and the behavior of objects in their animation. By manipulating the objects in their virtual world, students gain experience with all the programming constructs typically taught in an introductory programming course.

One of the teachers interviewed for the article said that it accomplishes the following learning objectives:
*engaging students in a meaningful reading activity
*performing a close reading of a text
*making inferences
*making distinctions between essential and nonessential information

Teaching resources, instructional texts, and support are also available on the site. The program works with both PCs and Macs.

Book suggestions for low level readers needed

Hi!

We are in a small town community northeast of Atlanta. The student population is diverse, with a 40% Hispanic population. Many of the students were born in the United States and have a middle to high proficiency with English.

We are looking to correspond with another class on a semi-regular basis, perhaps once a month. Right now we are reading "The Outsiders" with a follow up of "That Was Then, This is Now", both by S.E. Hinton. After Christmas we will be reading "Out of the Dust" and "The Diary of Anne Frank." This is a Literature class, so we would like to focus on literary discussion rather than letter-writing techniques per se. The students are excited about this project and we hope to hear from you soon!

Anyone with experience with "Falling Man"?

"Falling Man" is an obligatory piece of literature for courses of upper students (year 12 - 17-18 years old) here in Germany and I have never read this book in school before.
I'm very excited to get involved with epals, but I'm more interested in getting my class involved with online discussions rather than penpal-ing. With the use of Edublogs and similar sites, I'd like to create a forum where our classes would be able to interact regarding discussions of our classroom texts of other ideas.

I'm very open to ideas, but I wanted to throw out the names of the texts that we cover in my 9th grade English classroom: A Separate Peace, Romeo and Juliet, Anthem, Ethan Frome, The Miracle Worker, and we cover a variety of poetry and poetic terms. In addition to novels and plays, we also cover short stories like: The Idealist, The Most Dangerous Game, A Bird in the House, New African, and At Pitt Rivers.

My classes currently participate in discussion through turnitin.com, but these discussions are limited to our classroom alone. I think the kids would be much happier and more excited if they could communicate with people outside their own community!

I am studying at Laval University, Quebec, Canada, to become an English second language teacher and I would like to get some feedback about a project on Shakespeare I thought about.

I would like to use Shakespeare's famous play Othello with French secondary 4 learners of English. My idea was to have the students read 20 pages of the book per month during 8 months and create different activities for each part. These activities would focus on developping the students' reading skills and understanding of texts. Evalutations would take form of development questions on the storyline, true or false and yes-no questions.

Then, by the end of the year, I would form groups of 2-3 students and ask them to learn specific sections of the play (the most important ones) and memorize them. Finally, the students would act out their section on the play and I would evaluate them on their speaking abilities.

I'd like teachers, parents or anybody interested in the use of literature in classroom to give me feedback about my project and/or ideas on how to improve it.

Thanks

I'm looking for another class who is reading this to discuss the play's themes of Character Identity & Values, Relationships with Parents and Overcoming Adversity. I plan to create a blog where students can share comments. I teach at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, California, U.S.A. Sincerely, Candace Pauchnick.

Animal Farm

Why do you think revolutions occur? What circumstances would lead people to overthrow the daily political and economical structure of their lives?
