Re: Quick answer needed: What do students call teachers in your country?

In Pakistan, students mostly call their teachers 'Miss' for female and 'Sir' for male.  There are some purely Urdu-medium schools (Urdu = our national language) where they call them 'ustani' for female and 'ustad' for male.

I'm Nancy in the USA, and students call their teachers Mr., Mrs,  or Ms., followed by their surname.

    Hi,

In China, students call their teacher by "family name + teacher" , such as "Xu teacher" or "Zhang teacher" for example.

Hello everyone, a very simple question but yet interesting.  In my school, a city of Haryana state in India, students address female teachers as Miss or Ma'am or Madam, and male teachers are addressed as Sir.

    With regards,

    Lata Tejpal

    Assalomu alaykum(Hello), dear friends,

In my country-in Uzbekistan, mostly the pupils call “Dear teacher”, it will be in Uzbek: “Hurmatli Ustoz”, “Hurmatli muallim” or “Domla”.  “Domla” students use with teachers name. For ex: “Ravshan domla” or “Abdusattor domla” etc.

    Best wishes:  Rustamjon domla.

    Hello,

In South Korea, students call me by "Teacher", or "Sunsangnim', "English Teacher".  As the result, some of them even cannot remember my name.  If everyone call a teacher by either way, I mean Spanish or Korean way, there will be some positive and negative sides.  Why don't you just find some other ways to have some distance from students?  Maybe talk to them in a very polite accent?

    Hi,

In Spain, students call teachers by their first names.  At first, I thought it was nice and helped to create a certain 'closeness' between teacher/student but in fact I think it's good to have some distance and if I could I would use the Miss or Mrs with my first name.  Unfortunately it would be impossible to do here.  They even call the principal by her first name!

Hi, this answer might be too late, but in Australia we generally use the Mrs, Ms and Mr titles.

    Cheers,

    Sonia

Re: Quick answer needed: What do students call teachers in your country?

    Hello everyone,

Interesting question!  So simple yet very diverse.  Similar yet different.  In my school, students address female teachers as Mrs, Miss or Ms, and their last name.  Men are addressed as Mr., and last name.  For example, a married teacher, Mary Stevens, would be Mrs Stevens.

This is a teachable moment and an excellent example of the many benefits of ePals.

    With regards,

    Nwando
