Re: How do plants survive arid places?

Most plants in arid places, like cacti in the desert, can hold water in their stems or leaves.

    • yes they do adapt to their environment
    • some do but others do not die
    • yes they do have sun light in were they live. If not they would not grow
    • they die by animals eating them and making them weak, lack of water and food,  pests eating them.

Plants adapt to the water and soil that adapts to the plant cells that helps the plants not die.

    1. The plants sometimes adapt to not having certain things.

    2. The plants usually don't die.

An adaption for a plant in an arid place is called spines and thorns. Spines and thorns help a plant redirect the wind so the plant will not be dried out. If there is heavy rain the spines and thorns help redirect the rain to the base of the plant. They protect the plant so the herbivores will not eat it. The spines and thorns shade the plant by casting many shadows on it.

One plant adaptation is water storage. This is most commonly found in cacti because of their shape. Water storage is useful in desert habitats like a wash because it does not get a lot of water. In desert habitats like an oasis plants do not need to store water because they get a lot of water. Washes do not get a lot of rainfall and the water easily run through the rocky soil. In an oasis water is quite close to the surface so it is easy for plants to get to it.

Cacti that are round or oval shaped usually store water. Some Cacti are ribbed so they expand when they absorb water

Re: How do plants survive arid places?

Plants have many adaptations to survive in arid places. One adaptation is that they are allelopathic. That means that the plant is able to give off chemicals, making other plants not want to grow near this plant. The plant sends chemicals into the soil, and other plants detect the chemical. This is an adaptation because plants are able to keep getting water from around them, and there will be no competition for it. Through allelopathy a plant acquires the nutrients it needs without having to compete for it. Allelopathy is useful for all plants, not only cactus. In an oasis, plants use their allelopathic adaptation to ward of palm trees.

An adaptation for a plant in a arid place is called long roots and surface roots. These adaptations help because the tap root get ground water and the surface roots get water from rain fall. this water can be stored in the plant. In an oasis there is allot of water so they can get lots of water so they don’t have to worry about getting water.

Yes the plants die if they do not get enough of water

Yes the do have sunlight and they die because they dry out.

                                                                         Sincerely,

An adaptation for a plant in an arid place is light color. Light color helps by reflecting sunlight off the plant so that the plant loses less water. Dark color would absorb too much sunlight and the plant would suffer. Also leaves fold away from the sun so that they don't lose water.  Folded leaves have one side in the sun and one in the shade. Another adaptation is called oriented leaves. Oriented leaves can move away from the sunlight to just show the side of the leaf so that the leaf face is in the shade. These are some adaptations for plants to survive in the desert.

Re: How do plants survive arid places?

Some plants have special chambers in their roots and stems that hold water, so if it rains, they wiil be able to suck in a large amount of water and slowly use that instead of the normal rain our plants are used to. Cactuses are some of these plants, but some plants can live without the sun. Some live deep underground, in caves where their is no light, but they flourish and grow rapidly. They grow because of special nutrients in the soil and air around them.

Re: How do plants survive arid places?

Yes plants do adapt to were they live. Some plants go dormant when there is a shortage of water. Dormant means that it sleeps and does not take in anything. Some seeds actually do that because in the desert there is not that much water. So when the rains come it wakes up and grows.

Yes, plants will die if they do not store water or go dormant. They need these adaptions to live in the desert.

Yes, plants do need sun. Some plants have some adaptions to help with that to.  They die without water, sun light , and adaptions to live in some places.

Re: How do plants survive arid places?

Are you doing a class project on plants and water?  I have a good book called I Wonder Why Trees Have Leaves and Other Questions About Plants.  One of the questions was "Can plants grow in the desert?"  The desert is an arid place.  The book says that plants can grow there but they have to adapt.  It says that the plants have spread out roots to soak up any rain that might fall.  And that they store the water in their fat stems.  This book also talked about how some plants wither and die during the hot, dry season but the seeds survive.  When it does rain the seeds grow and flower quickly, in just a few weeks.

You should check out this book.  I think it would help you with your project.

How do plants survive arid places?

    1. Do the plants adapt?

    2. Do the plants die?

    3. Do the places have sun where the plants are? How do they die?
