Re: Hi, I teach high school math!

    Hello Pradeep,

I saw your message more than a year late. I have discovered that the Word problems are solved better by dividing them into two - comprehension and the mathematical part.

As a first step, I re-read the problem with my students, explaining the problem in day to day language (practical application), then I make them focus on the Mathematical ( Calculation) part of it.

The typical tough question in Algebra is the 'Age question' - My father's age is twice my age at present, It was 4 times 10 years ago and will be 1.5 times in 5 years from now ( This is not a correct question, but is being used for illustration).

In this question, current age is denoted by 'x', ten years ago gets replaced by 'x-10' and 5 years from now get replaced by 'x+5'. These are equated to the relevant ages of the father (2x to begin with). A substitution is done to arrive at the solution.

Hope I have been able to clarify. I am located in Delhi. Do let me know if you need more assistance, we can talk thru SKYKE or on phone.

    Hi Julio,

I am Ratuli, a Mathematics teacher in India. I conduct workshops for middle shool children (grades 7-8). Can you help me out by giving me  some ideas that would help me to teach algebra, some of the activities that you do with your children. My students would also love to discuss different strategies and develop math vocabulary with your students.

    Thanks

Re: Hi, I teach high school math!

Sorry about the late reply.  The project that I started them on was to come up with a way to improve the local environment in their community or their school.  I then took them through the process of coming up with a problem and then how to go about finding solutions.  For instance, we did a brainstorming session as a class to come up with environmental problems that they saw.  Students then got into groups and discussed each of those problems and started coming up with solutions to those problems.  This took about 2-3 class periods.  Then they looked at what problem/solution looked the best to them.  Once they chose one, they looked deeper into the problem to see how they could get to their solutions.  They brainstormed what this solution would look like.  I then looked at their process and suggested some gaps to fill in so that they would be prepared to present their ideas.  After they presented, their idea was ready to go and they got their materials together to be able to present their ideas to principal/superintendent or the city council.  After those sessions, they were able to get a better idea on what to do next.  At the end of the quarter, some groups chose to move onto a different topic and others chose to work towards finishing their original project.  The groups that chose to do something else, had to write a report to state what they had accomplished so that another group can pick up their project and complete it if they would like to.  Some examples of the students projects are Solar panels for our schools, greenhouse for the science department, writing music using mathematical principles to get interesting harmonies.  The hard part is to find the funding to get these projects accomplished, but that is where we are at this stage.

    Hi Julio

I am Ogwel from Kenya, a teacher trainer in mathematics in an in-service centre. I have read most of the views on mathematics in the forum. I want to recommend that you try GeoGebra, a Free and Open source software that integrates Geometry and Algebra. It is fun and available at www.geogebra.org

    Hi Julio!

I teach a math-physic-IT class that would be more than delighted to join your project. They are at the age of 17-18. This is an interesting idea and a wonderful opportunity to get my students involved in global conversation about maths problems and tasks.

We are looking forward to hearing from you soon!

    Best regards

That's a great idea.  Please tell me more about the  community based projects awarded to the students by you.

Re: Hi, I teach high school math!

    Hello,

I find that it is sometimes difficult to get students interested in math.  One of the things that I like to do is get them involved in different projects.  That way they can see where math is applied.  For instance, this year I looked at Discovery Streaming and saw a challenge that Siemens had provided on the environment.  It challenged students to get involved in their communities.  It is more of a science competition, but I transformed it so that it can be used in a Geometry classroom.  Now students are taking their ideas and helping their communities at the same time.  I feel the more that they do these kinds of things the better they will like math.

Re: Hi, I teach high school math!

    Julio,

I would be interested in some of my top Grade 6 students being involved in this project. The majority of them are undertaking either year 8 or 9 level maths and this sort of project would greatly assist them in expanding their knowledge and application of maths.
