Re: Looking for 4th grade classes to do Habitat Project

    Hello Viki,

           I work for UNESCO
Global Peace village in Korea. We are co-ordinating
an English language cultural postal exchange that you may be interested in.

We teach all schools from Icheon city on
themes of culture, peace and environment for one week
blocks. As part of our culture classes we are
designing a project that will allow children from
Icheon to connect with and understand the everyday
lives of children from around the world. We have already organised
very simple postal cultural exchanges with schools
from around the world. This has involved schools
exchanging a single package with English
language letters and items representing their
    everyday experience and
culture. For example, music, pictures, art and simple
inexpensive cultural items. Each school or class will
be paired with one Korean school who will in
turn send letters and cultural items. The project
also holds the potential for links to be maintained
both between individual students and schools.

If you are interested in participating in this
    project please let me know

    Regards,

    Paul

    Michael,

We might have fourth graders in Lakewood, Colorado, who are interested in collaborating on this project.

Re: Looking for 4th grade classes to do Habitat Project

I teach a 4th and 5th grade combination class at a small private school in Northborough, MA, USA. I'm expecting a class of 10 students this year as well.  Although we use computers in the classroom every day, I have just found ePals! We are studying biomes this year, and I would love to provide my students with habitat experiences from around the world.  We are able to communicate via e-mail, our classroom wiki, skype, or snail mail (post).  The more participants, the richer the experience for all!  Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Warm regards,

    Stephanie Doty

Re: Looking for 4th grade classes to do Habitat Project

    Dear Geoff,

    My email address is donnacolavolpe@epals.com

My students do not have email addresses right now, but I will see if I can set up accounts for them. For now, your students can send email to my address and I can share it with my class.

I really like the power point idea...I think we will do that as well.

Re: Looking for 4th grade classes to do Habitat Project

    Dear Donna,

Thank you for your reply! What you're talking about sounds great! I like the idea of holding a skype call, too. I have set up some email accounts for our students. Would it be possible for them to write to yours with a self introduction? Then, in the meantime, they will be finding out about animals, plant life and habitats here. We're thinking on putting it all together in a powerpoint. We do have a web site also so we'll probably post something on that, too. At the moment our website is all in Japanese, so we will make an English section for the site.

If you could tell me your email address, I can send a list of my students details to you for yours to contact mine.

    Kind regards,

    Geoff England

Re: Looking for 4th grade classes to do Habitat Project

    Dear Geoff,

I think my students would love to work on a Habitats project with your students. What I am going to do is have my children write about and take photos of the habitats around Long Island.  I wa considering having them post their work on a web site...either our class site or maybe a voice thread...I will email you and send you the link as soon as we have some items posted. I am thinking of having this an ongoing project, so we will continually post items. Eventually I would love if our classes could meet via skype and talk about what they learned about each other's habitats.

Since I have 9 and 10 year olds, we are going to focus on landforms, plants, animals, insects, and anything else they come up with to write about. how does this sound to you?

    Donna

Re: Looking for 4th grade classes to do Habitat Project

    Dear Donna,

Thank you for replying to my post! My students are 11 and 12 years old (junior high 1). Most of them spent time living overseas so they have very good English ability. As for the class itself, it is a small class consisting of only 6 students.

Long Island looks like a very interesting place to do a habitat project with. If you don't think that there is too much of an age difference, I am sure that my students would like to partake in a project with yours.

The school term in Japan starts on the 5th but classes won't actually start until around the 10th.

Thanks again for your reply and I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Best wishes,

    Geoff England

Firstly, let me tell you a little bit about my students. This year we will be running a global class at our school. Most of the students who are required to learn English range from having no prior Enlgish ability to native ability. Since our higher level students don't need to start learning English from their ABCs we have a special more challenging class for them.

My students are 11 and 12 years of age.

Hello! I work at a private junior high school in Tokyo Japan. As of this April, we will be running a global course for students who have good English ability. Most of the students have spent time living overseas, so I am sure that they would love to work on a collaborative project using ePals. Would your students be interested in the "habitats" project? If so, we would love to hear back from you.

    Mrs. G. Vaijayanthi,

Thanks for contacting me.  How many classes would you be able to work with?  How many students are in each class?  When would you like to start?

Re: Looking for 4th grade classes to do Habitat Project

    Claire,

Hello how are you today? I am writing to you because we are  looking into our unit on habitats for science. We are also studying biomes around the world. Our kids are very comfortable with technology , and utilize the computer labs and the smart boards. I've told my students how beautiful New Zealand is, and many of their favorite movies were taped on location i.e Lord of the Rings. I was wondering when you get a chance you could send some pictures of your "backyard". Seeing real pictures of nature will be more effective. Plus, students knowing its for them make it more personable.Thanks.

    Jasmine
