I did't know that he died. But i did know that he left because they made fun of Scientology, and the actor that played Chef couldn't handle it.

I've been watching South Park for so long and I did not know Chef's character died and the actor who played him. I thought they didn't pay him enough to still be Chef. I miss him being on the show and I wish he was still alive.

He was a good character but the thing is Chef's voice actor (Isaac Hayes) resigned after Parker and Stone (Southpark creators) poked fun at Scientology in an episode. About 2 months after his resignation, he suffered a heart attack, dying shortly after. He was one of the most open-ended characters and he was very interesting but we won't ever be seeing him in the new episodes.
