Candace Pauchnick has been teaching in the San Diego School District secondary education system since 1974, in the English and Consumer & Family Studies departments. She recently completed her Master of Science in Educational Technology. Her thesis involved the study of students using the ePals program to determine if this activity can overcome prejudices. It can. The research proved students moved from being ethnocentric to ethnorelative. In September, 2002, Ms. Paucnick discovered the ePals program and connected her students to students in the Czech Republic and Japan. Since that time she has connected her students with other students in fifteen other countries. Yaodong Chen, who is the professor in the Guangxi Polytechnic University in Liuzhou, China, and Ms. Pauchnick have been connected since September, 2004. They have used the ePals email system and then last year they created an ePALS SchoolBlog page. The blog page provides a community feeling for the students. The two teachers held a web conference in May, 2008, and their blog page enabled their students to share their reflections of the event. This was their 2nd web conference and they look forward to many more. The ePals program has provided the tools for her students to take virtual field trips around the world and learn about many different cultural lifestyles.
