The Americans sent 3 mascots/stuffed animals to Australia and the Australian’s sent 3 to America. The mascots represent important items that are specific to the immediate area in which the schools are located and the surrounding regions. The Americans sent a wolverine (Michigan’s nickname- Wolverine State), a white-tailed deer (Michigan’s state mammal), and a Spartan (Sparta Schools’ mascot). The Australians sent two koala bears and a kangaroo to represent common marsupial animals found in Australia. Students take turns bringing the mascots outside of school to take digital pictures of/with the mascots in various places that represent the area in which the students live. Then, the students send the digital photos through ePals e-mail to their ePal.

The GPV is a place for Korean students to come and learn about the UN, Culture, Peace, and the Environment. All of these ideas are taught in English over the course of a week. Each Friday morning the students come together to create “The Box”. First we show a PowerPoint teaching the students about the project and then they get to work!

The project involves us sending a box of things highlighting Korean culture to a school in another country and them sending us one about their culture. This provides a great way for kids to learn about their culture and that of another country, all while having a great time! Download the pdf to learn more about the project including links to student work and the blog.

GPV Culture Box: A Culture Box Exchange Programme

GPV Culture Box: A Culture Box Exchange Programme

Elementary students go to the camp to learn major global topics like "Peace, Environment and Culture" in English. At the end of the week-long program, they are given a couple of hours to make anything from A to Z to be put in a box which will eventually be sent to the partner school. All of the things that represent culture and everyday life will be put in the box. Our school in Cyprus integrated the creation of the culture box into the English language curriculum-unit: Lifestyle. Both partner schools exchanged by post a box full of cultural elements! The videos and PowerPoint show the whole process of creating and displaying the culture box.

Instead of reading a history textbook, students have the opportunity to record history by preserving the service of a veteran forever. Students choose a local veteran to interview. In the process, students research the veteran’s conflict, research proper interviewing skills, and record a 30-minute interview to be placed in the Veterans History Project archive in the Library of Congress. After conducting the interview, students type a transcript of the interview and submit it. The students then type a biographical narrative of the veteran and create a multimedia project and poster of the veteran to be presented to the veteran, his or her family, and the students’ parents at an evening program. Download the pdf for the full project description and links to student work samples.

Veterans History Project - Photo Slide Show

The Veterans History Project is the largest collection of oral histories in the United States. By participating in this project and preserving the oral history of one of our nation's veterans, students have the opportunity to record history rather than just read about it in a textbook. These photos were taken while Eastern Lebanon County High School students participated in this ongoing, collaborative project and then deleivered their work along with teachers and veterans to the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. This project was submitted by teacher Jonathan Bickel and appeared in the ePals Teacher Spotlight in January, 2012.
