Overview for all age groups: In the ePALS Money Exchange Project, you will learn about how currency is used around the world. You and your ePALS' partner class will share ideas, collaborate and work towards a common goal. Currency is used around the world to buy goods and services which can then be used in trade for other goods and services. Most countries have their own currencies which differ in value and appearance from those of other countries. Some countries do not use a monetary system at all; instead, they use a system of bartering. Batering is the trading of goods and services for other goods and services. Visual representations on coins and paper money often reflect historical events, national animals, heroes/heroines and national pride. Students in some countries have access to their own money which is earned by performing family or community related tasks. Other students rely on a system of trading or bartering to have purchasing power. These projects will explore the value of currencies in different parts of the world, beginning with your own: What you can buy with it? What might you like to trade it for? It is suggested that each class would benefit from partnering with a class in another part of the world. This way, participants can see what value the currencies have in relation to each other and what kinds of goods and services are purchased and used. Age Ranges:
