Flag Projects

For all grade levels

Every country in the world has its own flag. Flags are also used to recognize organizations and celebrations.

ePALS Classroom Exchange presents a collaborative project to help you and your ePALS partner class celebrate your new friendship: Design and create an ePALS Friendship Flag! This flag can represent both of your countries and the information that you have learned together. Your flag could include:

  • elements of each other's national identity and citizenship
  • the subject matter of the projects you have worked on together
  • what your students have determined to be important in their ePALS correspondence
  • some of the similarities that you have found between you and your partner class

The flag should be designed in a format of 10 inches x 15 inches, or 25.4 centimeters x 38.1 centimeters. With your partner class, you can decide:

  • Will you design this flag online, or in your classroom using emails to describe what should be included?
  • Can you take a digital photograph of your work in progress and/or your completed flag? Do you have access to a scanner?
  • What will your flag be made out of (i.e. paper or fabric)?
  • Will you mail each other the final product via "snail mail" to keep in your school in remembrance of your ePALS' relationship?

Here are some questions you and your partners might like to discuss in order to learn more about each other's flags:

Question Your Answer Your Partner's Answer
1. What are some of the symbols included in your country's flag?
2. Describe what some of the symbols mean to you.
3. Is there a day in your country that celebrates your flag? If so, what are these celebrations like?
4. Where are some of the places in your town that you see your flag flying?

You may need the Internet and your library to research some of these questions. Some sources to help get you started are: www.flags.net and www.flagday.com.
