Smithsonian: Black History Month 2012

Celebrating Diversity

February is Black History Month in the USA and we celebrate in our Global Community by embracing diversity and tolerance worldwide. In partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, ePals encourages Global Community members to learn about black history through online museum exhibits, student activities, and classroom lessons.

Activities You Can Do

Featured Activity: African American Cultural Heritage Tour

Explore elements of African American culture and create your heritage tour.

Create your own Virtual Heritage Tour

In the Smithsonian Virtual Heritage Tour, you learned that ?valuable objects and famous people only tell us part of the story.? All kinds of everyday objects and people give real depth and meaning to history. Your heritage is something that belongs uniquely to you and your family. No one else has the same heritage as you. Learn more about the everyday objects and people who create your unique heritage and create your own personal virtual heritage tour.

?

Create It!
Create a virtual tour that celebrates your heritage. Choose 4-8 objects/artifacts that represent you, your family, your community and your heritage. Write a brief paragraph about each item, and how it represents a part of your heritage. With a title slide and a closing slide, your PowerPoint Presentation should be 10 pages. If you'd like, add musical narration as you saw in the Smithsonian tour.

?

Share It!
Upload your PowerPoint presentation to the Student Media Galleries. Be sure to write a few sentences describing your project.
