Traditional Mythology: Write a story in the style of a myth

Age Ranges: Ages 5-9 | Ages 9-12 | Ages 13-17

Overview for all ages:
Every culture has a story tradition. Stories are told to celebrate events, to mark milestones, to mourn losses and to teach important lessons. By writing a story down, we help ensure that these stories are not forgotten. This story writing project is aimed at helping students understand and respect the traditions and beliefs that are part of one of three different groups of indigenous cultures.

This project will let you and your ePALS partners create a story together - either paragraph by paragraph or by trading and editing stories that include the same people, places and things. Your story will include mythical characters, places in the world and sacred objects that are part of the African, indigenous Australian (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) or Native North American cultural and social traditions.

Subject Areas Covered in this Project:
Language Arts, Internet and Library Research Skills, Writing, Social Studies, Second Language Skills, Storytelling, Heritage Studies, Keyboarding Skills and Group Skills

Time Frame for Completion:
Four to six weeks, depending on the frequency of contact with your partner class.

Before You Begin:
With your partner teacher and your students, decide together which people, places and things you would like to include in your story from the list provided by ePALS, or from items discovered in your research. If you have access to a scanner, decide whether you would like to include illustrations with your story. Have your students work together in groups to determine the plot outline and the moral of the story. Use email to choose a subject for your story with your partner. It may take the students several exchanges of email to come up with the outline of a well-told and meaningful story that your class and partners agree upon.

At ePALS, we would love to read your stories. Make sure you send us a copy of your completed story at projects@epals.com
